Focusing on poverty alleviation for chronic diseases, putting corporate social responsibility into action
Published Time:
2019-08-12
According to the China Non-Communicable Disease Report, non-communicable diseases have become the leading cause of death among urban and rural residents in China. In impoverished areas, the mortality rate from non-communicable diseases reaches 60%. Middle-aged and elderly individuals with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia constitute the main group affected by non-communicable diseases. In rural areas, many patients develop various complications due to delayed medical treatment, and some families fall into poverty due to long-term medication and treatment.
2019 was a crucial year for China's poverty alleviation efforts. A team of pharmaceutical companies has been active in Songpan County, Aba Prefecture, focusing on how to assume greater social responsibility and combine their strengths with targeted poverty alleviation efforts. Their work centers on providing assistance to the elderly and middle-aged population suffering from non-communicable diseases, implementing a unique poverty alleviation program targeting these diseases.
According to relevant officials from the Songpan County Poverty Alleviation Office, starting in November 2018, Jiankangyuan, Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group, and Songpan County reached an agreement on poverty alleviation through addressing non-communicable diseases. The first batch of medicines, valued at 1 million yuan, was gradually distributed to impoverished elderly and middle-aged residents in Songpan County suffering from these diseases. Simultaneously, volunteers from Jiankangyuan, accompanied by leaders from the Songpan County Health and Health Commission, began visiting impoverished townships.
Poverty alleviation volunteers visited an elderly Tibetan woman suffering from hypertension and coronary heart disease. At an altitude of over 3,000 meters, she lives alone in a brick house. She told the volunteers that the long-term use of medication for non-communicable diseases is a considerable expense, so she often reduces her medication intake, saving money to help her grandson with his schooling.
“We adhere to the principles of openness and fairness, striving to ensure that more patients with non-communicable diseases in our cooperative poverty alleviation areas can receive free medication,” said a relevant official of the poverty alleviation project. After the group and the government reached a poverty alleviation agreement, the local health and health commission compiles a list of impoverished patients with non-communicable diseases in the entire region or county. The local people's hospital or clinic assesses the patients' conditions before distributing the medication. To date, 2 million yuan worth of medicines have been donated to Zhaotien District, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, and Songpan County. (Hong Bo)”
