Kindness on the road, delivering warmth to impoverished patients with chronic diseases

The deep winter of Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is completely covered in snow. This county, historically known as "Pan Zhou Wei," belongs to the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and is one of the national key poverty-stricken counties. Meanwhile, in the warm city of Shenzhen, Health Yuan's poverty alleviation volunteers boarded a flight to Songpan County, preparing to communicate with the local county government about the group's chronic disease poverty alleviation program.

It was already midnight when they arrived in Chengdu. The Sichuan winter is damp and cold. The volunteers found a hotel near the bus station, and went straight to sleep. The next morning, they boarded a long-distance bus from Chengdu to Songpan. Snow was already falling.

Songpan County has complex terrain and significant differences in altitude. It is a multi-ethnic area. After a short rest, the volunteers, accompanied by leaders from the Songpan County Health and Health Commission, began visiting impoverished townships. After seeing the elderly suffering from hypertension, coronary heart disease, and other diseases, and the entire families impoverished by illness, they were even more determined in their commitment to chronic disease poverty alleviation.

In November 2018, Health Yuan & Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group reached a chronic disease poverty alleviation agreement with Songpan County. The first batch of medicines, worth 1 million yuan, were gradually distributed to impoverished elderly people in Songpan County suffering from chronic diseases, bringing them health and care.

Upholding our original aspiration, carrying on the spirit of public welfare and charity

Many people may not be familiar with the name Health Yuan, but they will certainly be familiar with Tai Tai Oral Liquid or Jing Xin Oral Liquid. In the early 1990s, Health Yuan, which had been established not long before, developed and launched Tai Tai Oral Liquid in 1993, ushering in the era of women's health products and establishing its position as a leader in the health product industry. Later, it launched Jing Xin Oral Liquid, which was also a great success in the market. From 1995 to 1997, Health Yuan completed its strategic transformation into the pharmaceutical field and acquired Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. in 2002, transforming it into one of China's most competitive large pharmaceutical listed companies.

Today, Health Yuan has become a diversified and comprehensive group company covering the research, development, production, sales, and service of pharmaceutical and health products. The company owns two large listed companies, Health Yuan Pharmaceutical and Lizhu Pharmaceutical, as well as more than 30 major subsidiaries, with nearly 10,000 employees.

While continuously developing itself, Health Yuan has not forgotten to give back to society. Its public welfare and charitable activities can be traced back to 1994, when it donated to the Hope Project, helping children from impoverished areas return to school. Actively leveraging its corporate strengths to serve society and the people is Health Yuan's unchanging original aspiration. This original aspiration stems from a proponent and promoter of public welfare and charitable causes—Zhu Baoguo, Chairman of Health Yuan. He participated in the co-founding of the "Taoyuan Ecological Protection Foundation," serving as the executive president of the first board of directors, and served as the secretary-general of the Greater China Council of TNC The Nature Conservancy. He was awarded the TNC "Oak Leaf Award." In addition to providing strong financial support to global environmental projects, Zhu Baoguo has also devoted a great deal of personal time and energy to specific management work. After the 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan, he immediately organized the group's efforts to donate more than 10 million yuan worth of materials to the disaster area, receiving full affirmation from all sectors of society. Under Zhu Baoguo's leadership, Health Yuan and Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group have not forgotten the social mission of listed companies, focusing on people's livelihood and actively responding to the precision poverty alleviation policy, giving full play to the role of listed companies in the fight against poverty. They not only actively carry out charitable activities, but also radiate and drive the poverty alleviation of impoverished households in Datong, Shanxi Province, promoting local industrial poverty alleviation in a way that suits local conditions—developing a planting base for authentic Huangqi medicinal materials, forming one of the pillars of local poverty alleviation and wealth creation; at the same time, they actively carry out medical and health poverty alleviation projects in Sichuan and Shanxi provinces.

With a spirit of altruism, Zhu Baoguo has offered warmth to more compatriots in need. He is the winner of the 2018 "China Annual Economic Figure" award, and has also received the "2018 Tribute to Philanthropists" and "Pengcheng Charitable Donation Individual Gold Award." Health Yuan also received the "China Poverty Alleviation Contribution Award" and "2019 China Poverty Alleviation Demonstration Case" awards. Upholding its original aspiration for public welfare and carrying on the spirit of charity, Zhu Baoguo has put the spirit of entrepreneurship into practice with his actions, conveying the power of public welfare and love.

True and real, expanding the breadth of life with action

Health Yuan & Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group, as a pharmaceutical company that has long participated in public welfare activities, actively responds to national policies, combining its corporate advantages with precision poverty alleviation, focusing on helping elderly people with chronic diseases, and has launched a unique chronic disease poverty alleviation program.

According to the China Chronic Disease Report, chronic diseases have become the leading cause of death among urban and rural residents in China. In impoverished areas, the mortality rate from chronic diseases reaches 60%. Elderly people with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia are the main group suffering from chronic diseases. In rural areas, many patients develop various complications due to a lack of timely medical treatment, and some families fall into poverty due to long-term medication and treatment. Health Yuan & Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group has a wide range of pharmaceutical products. Donating medicines for treating chronic diseases to impoverished families can not only help them alleviate their condition but also alleviate their economic pressure to some extent.

At the beginning of 2019, Health Yuan Group's poverty alleviation volunteers visited an elderly Tibetan woman suffering from hypertension and coronary heart disease. At an altitude of over 3,000 meters, she lived alone in a brick house. She told the volunteers that long-term use of chronic disease medication was a considerable expense, so she usually took very little medicine, saving the money to pay for her grandson's schooling. In the vast rural areas of China, there are many elderly people with chronic diseases like her.

The length of life cannot be predicted or controlled, but the suffering of illness can be alleviated through active prevention and treatment to improve the quality of life. Health Yuan & Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group has expanded the breadth of life through chronic disease poverty alleviation, which is the best footnote to the significance of health poverty alleviation.

Combining forces, working together to expand the breadth of life

Health Yuan & Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group's chronic disease poverty alleviation program adheres to the principles of openness and fairness, striving to ensure that more chronic disease patients in the cooperative poverty alleviation areas can receive free medicines. After the group and the government reach a poverty alleviation agreement, the local health and health commission will compile a list of impoverished patients with chronic diseases in the entire district or county. The local people's hospital or health center will assess the patients' conditions and arrange for the distribution of medicines. Currently, Health Yuan & Lizhu Pharmaceutical Group has donated 2 million yuan worth of medicines to Guangyuan Chaotiang District, Sichuan Province, and Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Subsequently, they will donate another 2 million yuan worth of medicines to Guangling County and Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi Province.

It takes many hands to make light work, and a single tree does not make a forest. In the process of poverty alleviation for chronic diseases, with the support of the government, Health Yuan has joined forces with a number of charitable organizations dedicated to public welfare. For example, the Firefly Love Association in Songpan County's chronic disease poverty alleviation program leverages its strengths to work hand-in-hand with enterprises to actively promote the implementation of chronic disease poverty alleviation.

Measure the length of life with time, and expand the breadth of life with health. A sense of responsibility, mission, and honor have driven Health Yuan's corporate social responsibility and commitment to its charitable mission for nearly 27 years, steadily advancing on the path of poverty alleviation. In the past and in the future, we will remain true to our original aspirations, passing on love from generation to generation, upholding the ideals and responsibilities of a pharmaceutical enterprise, and striving to achieve the Chinese Dream.
