On January 26, 2024, HealthGen Pharma Group made another breakthrough in its innovative drug R&D layout—reaching a cooperation with Tongbo'an Bio on the exclusive rights in mainland China for the use of BA2101 injection, a long-acting anti-IL-4Rα monoclonal antibody, in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Public information shows that HealthGen Pharma Group, as a leading enterprise in the domestic respiratory treatment field, has long adhered to a diversified innovation layout focusing on "unmet clinical needs." To date, the company has added multiple innovative drugs to its Big Pharma-level product pipeline, covering respiratory and analgesic fields.
BA2101 injection is an IL-4Rα-targeted drug, an innovative long-acting, fully human monoclonal IgG4 antibody. It targets interleukin-4 receptor subunit α (IL-4Rα), simultaneously inhibiting the IL-4 and IL-13 signaling pathways, regulating Th2 inflammation, and reducing eosinophil content and IgE levels. This product is intended for the treatment of allergic diseases caused by Th2 inflammation, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, COPD, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, nodular prurigo, and chronic spontaneous urticaria. Currently, BA2101 has received clinical trial approval for all of the above indications.
IL-4Rα-targeted drugs, due to their unique pharmacological properties and clinical application prospects, have enormous market potential. A Frost & Sullivan report shows that the global market size of IL-4Rα-targeted therapies is expected to reach US$28.7 billion in 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 21.6% from 2020 to 2030; the market size of IL-4Rα-targeted therapies in China is expected to reach RMB 28.2 billion in 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 76.8% from 2020 to 2030. Public information shows that Dupixent, jointly developed by Sanofi (SNY.US) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN.US), has been approved by regulatory authorities in one or more countries worldwide for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, asthma, CRSwNP, EoE, or nodular prurigo in certain age groups. In the five years since its launch, Dupixent's global sales have reached nearly €20 billion.
In the treatment of asthma, IL-4Rα can rapidly and sustainably improve lung function, significantly reduce the risk of acute asthma attacks, and improve patients' quality of life. In the treatment of COPD, IL-4Rα may also be the first successful biological drug target for COPD.
HealthGen President Yu Xiong stated: "Asthma and COPD are among the most common chronic respiratory diseases, seriously threatening public health. There is an urgent clinical need for innovative drugs to further improve symptoms and control levels. We are pleased to cooperate with Boan Bio to obtain the exclusive rights in mainland China for BA2101 injection for the treatment of asthma and COPD. This product will not only provide new treatment options for patients suffering from these diseases, but will also further expand our innovative drug portfolio in the field of respiratory diseases, better serving the unmet treatment needs of patients."
Boan Bio R&D President and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Dou Changlin, stated: "Th2 inflammatory diseases involve multiple diseases, and comorbidities are relatively common, placing a heavy burden on patients. IL-4Rα is an important target for the treatment of Th2 inflammatory diseases, and the unique long-acting and targeted effects of BA2101 will play an important clinical value in the long-term management of related diseases. Through this cooperation, Boan Bio and HealthGen will actively leverage their respective advantages in R&D and commercialization to accelerate the clinical development of BA2101 injection in diseases such as asthma and COPD; in addition, Boan Bio will also accelerate the development of more indications with its efficient clinical development and promotion capabilities, allowing patients to benefit sooner."
