With an apricot-shaped face, peach-like cheeks, red lips, and a cool mohawk hairstyle—have you ever seen a friend like this? It roams the mountains and primeval forests at the junction of Yunnan and Tibet provinces, a species unique to China, as endangered as the national treasure panda. It is the snow mountain elf—the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey.
The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is a rare and endangered species unique to China, with a total population of only over 3,000. It has been classified as Endangered (EN) by the IUCN Red List, meaning that it faces a high probability of extinction in the near future. Hunting, deforestation, unregulated tourism, overgrazing, and uncontrolled collection—human activities constantly threaten the survival of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey. In the mid-1980s, the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey was once thought to have disappeared. With the support of the government and public welfare forces, the number of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys has begun to slowly increase. However, if conservation efforts cease, they could quickly become extinct. The world will never see their smiles again.

Over the past 15 years, we have been working to protect this endangered species through a series of activities, including surveys and monitoring of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey's habitat, helping to establish community patrol teams, supporting community development to reduce the impact of local villagers on the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey's habitat, and public education and outreach. Pleasingly, our conservation methods are effective! Change has happened! For example, the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey population in Laojun Mountain has increased from about 150 fifteen years ago to about 300 today!
The road to protection is long and arduous
The Laojun Mountain community patrol team, composed of local villagers, patrols the primeval forest at an altitude of over 3,000 meters for nearly 4,000 hours each year. In 15 years, the distance they have walked could circle the earth twice! During their patrols, they have removed thousands of traps and dealt with over 3,000 interference incidents.

Their patrol conditions are extremely difficult. Not only do they lack professional protective equipment and often have to rough it in the mountains, but they also constantly face the dangers of rugged mountain roads and the unknown perils of the primeval forest. The harsh working environment, meager subsidies, the urgent need for updated patrol equipment, and the lack of protection skills training—the pressures and challenges they face are immense. However, the difficulties faced by Yunnan snub-nosed monkey conservation efforts go far beyond this:
Most monkey groups still lack targeted monitoring and patrol management;
Some monkey groups are distributed outside nature reserves and cannot be effectively protected;
Unregulated production and business activities in surrounding communities continue to have a significant impact on the survival of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey;
