On September 21, "Recombinant Novel Coronavirus Fusion Protein Vaccine" (hereinafter referred to as "Likang V-01"), jointly developed by Lizhu Antibody, a subsidiary of Lizhu Group, and the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was launched in Zhuhai as a sequential booster shot.
According to relevant announcements, the vaccine has been approved for inclusion in the emergency use of sequential booster immunization against novel coronavirus infection by the National Medical Products Administration after review.

It is understood that Likang V-01, an innovative recombinant protein vaccine with independent intellectual property rights, started its research and development in July 2020. It was approved for clinical trials by the National Medical Products Administration of China in January 2021, with an indication for the prevention of diseases caused by novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

Currently, the domestically approved COVID-19 vaccines are mainly divided into three technical routes: inactivated vaccines, adenovirus vector vaccines, and recombinant protein vaccines. Inactivated vaccines are the most approved and widely used, such as those from Sinovac and Sinopharm. Adenovirus vector vaccines have viral activity, such as those from CanSino.
Likang V-01 belongs to the recombinant protein vaccine and can currently be used for sequential booster immunization. Sequential boosting refers to booster immunization using a vaccine with a different technical route from the basic immunization.

"Likang V-01 is the world's first vaccine to pass Phase III clinical trials for protective efficacy and obtain clinical results showing protection against the Omicron variant. It can be considered a 2.0 version of the recombinant protein vaccine." Dr. Yang Jiaming, executive vice general manager of Lizhu Antibody Biotechnology Co., Ltd., introduced that unlike traditional recombinant protein vaccines, Likang V-01 innovatively integrates four parts: interferon, Pan epitope, RBD dimer, and Fc fusion protein, based on the RBD dimer of the recombinant protein vaccine.
Among them, human interferon, as a biological adjuvant, is noteworthy. The adjuvant of a vaccine largely determines its efficacy and safety. Dr. Yang Jiaming introduced, "Because Likang V-01 incorporates the biological adjuvant interferon into its antigen structure, it significantly enhances the level of virus-neutralizing antibodies and produces an effective cellular response. Experimental data show that sequential boosting with Likang V-01 based on inactivated vaccines results in a four-fold increase in receptor-neutralizing antibody levels compared to the full course of inactivated vaccines, with better protection."

Dr. Hu Zhenxiang, deputy general manager of Lizhu Antibody, said that the Phase III clinical trial of Likang V-01 included more than 30,000 subjects, of which more than 20,000 were for basic immunization and more than 10,000 for sequential boosting. Over 90% of the endpoint cases were Omicron. The results showed that based on two doses of inactivated vaccines, the absolute protective efficacy of Likang V-01 booster against Omicron reached 61.35%, and the protective efficacy in high-risk groups (over 60 years old or with underlying diseases) reached 61.19%.
In terms of safety, "the combination of efficacy and safety is an important feature of Likang V-01, belonging to the first-tier vaccines." Dr. Yang Jiaming said that the adverse reaction rate of Likang V-01 is much lower than that of mRNA vaccines and adenovirus vector vaccines, and is comparable to that of inactivated vaccines. For example, the number of cases of pain and fever after vaccination is one-tenth that of mRNA vaccines, with mild reactions and quick recovery. In terms of accessibility, Likang V-01 can be transported and stored at 2-8℃.

It is understood that in order to alleviate the urgent domestic and international social demand for COVID-19 vaccines, Lizhu Antibody undertook the transformation of high-tech achievements from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with rapid development, ensuring the steady progress of research and development and commercial production. Currently, raw materials have been localized, the supply chain is stable, and material reserves are sufficient. Since May last year, the bulk and formulation workshops of Lizhu Antibody have been put into use successively, and currently have an annual production capacity of 3.5 billion doses of bulk and 1.5 billion doses of formulations.
At the vaccination site, Fang Jianrui, director of the immunization planning management office of Zhuhai CDC, introduced that the current recipients of Likang V-01 are people aged 18 and above who have received two doses of inactivated vaccines and have waited for at least six months. Currently, all COVID-19 vaccination clinics in Zhuhai are equipped with Likang V-01, and citizens can make appointments through the "Healthy Zhuhai" WeChat public account.
