Calling for Social Attention to Early Diagnosis and Treatment of COPD—The "Shutanlin® Early COPD Treatment Project" Launch Meeting Successfully Held
On the afternoon of June 22, 2021, an online launch meeting was held for the national multicenter clinical study "Compound Ipratropium Bromide (Shutanlin®) Treatment of Early COPD Project," initiated by the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University/Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health/National Center for Respiratory Medicine/National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases.
Professor Zhong Nanshan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases; Mr. Liu Chengyong, deputy director of the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission; and research teams from eight project sub-centers in Chongqing, Xiamen, Chengdu, Huizhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, as well as local health commission leaders attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Professor Zheng Jinping, deputy director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, executive deputy director of the National Center for Respiratory Medicine, and vice president of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health.
At the launch meeting, Academician Zhong Nanshan of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases delivered a speech, emphasizing the "greater health" concept of prioritizing health over treatment. Based on the current global neglect of early diagnosis and treatment of COPD, he expressed his hope to "change the world's treatment strategy for COPD and bring China's treatment plan to the forefront of the world," a dream he has pursued for over 20 years.
At the launch meeting, Academician Zhong Nanshan also specifically introduced the support and contributions of HealthGen Biotech Group to the project. He mentioned that despite the high investment and lack of returns for the product shortly after its launch, HealthGen specially designed a portable nebulizer for this project, effectively improving patient usage efficiency.
Professor Yu Xiong, president of Joincare Pharmaceutical Group Industry Co., Ltd., delivered a speech introducing the trial drug for this project—inhaled compound ipratropium bromide solution (Shutanlin®), the first domestically produced respiratory inhalation preparation in China to pass consistency evaluation. A matching portable nebulizer was specially developed for convenient use in the project. President Yu Xiong stated that Joincare Pharmaceutical Group Industry Co., Ltd. is in sync with the national Healthy China 2030 strategic plan and will do everything in its power to fully support the project, wishing it complete success.

Following this, Professor Zheng Jinping, deputy director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, executive deputy director of the National Center for Respiratory Medicine, and vice president of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, introduced the project background, research ideas, and the situation of each participating center; Dr. Wang Fengyan from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University gave a detailed explanation of the research plan; Ms. Huang Juan, manager of Guangzhou HealthGen Respiratory Drug Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., demonstrated the use of the nebulizer in this project; and Ms. Cai Xiaoqin, director of the marketing department of Saiker (Xiamen) Medical Device Co., Ltd., introduced lung function testing, instruments, and platforms. Subsequently, Academician Zhong Nanshan and Professor Zheng Jinping organized discussions on the research plan with multiple participating centers, answering questions raised by the research teams of each sub-center.
In addition, the health commissions and center leaders from the locations of the participating centers expressed their strong support for the project. Deputy Director Liu Chengyong, representing the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, delivered an important speech, conveying the commission's importance and support for the project and wishing the research a complete success.
The launch meeting facilitated the smooth progress of the project. Through enthusiastic discussions, the research team will plan the project implementation more scientifically and rationally. The successful launch of this project will propel COPD diagnosis and treatment into a new phase, transitioning from a passive treatment model to one of early screening, early diagnosis, and early treatment. The goal is to improve the degree of decline in patients' lung function, increase the lung function reversal rate, reduce the number of acute exacerbations, improve quality of life and symptoms, and reduce the burden on patients' families, society, and the nation.
